Member Skype #15 Warmup – Mulholland Drive (2001)
Call now published now available here.
This is the warmup thread for the next Member Skype call, which will be focused on discussion and analysis of the 2001 film Mulholland Drive.
I confess to never having seen the film myself (a matter I intend to rectify within the coming days).
The film comes highly recommended by fuhng, whose previous suggestions include The Prestige, which quickly became a personal favourite of mine.
Those of you who have seen the film: get the ball rolling!
What do you like/dislike about it? What are the themes or ideas explored which resonate with you? Are there any subtextual elements which stand out?
Remember that these warmup thread are open to everybody, but the calls themselves are open only to Full Members of johnlebon.com
Since it’s 2 days before the call and nobody has commented, I’ll try to stimulate some discussion even though I probably won’t make this call as we’re deep into our move. I will try to watch the movie before I listen.
Here’s a link to Jay Dyer’s post on Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive https://jaysanalysis.com/2015/11/29/esoteric-hollywood-occult-meaning-of-lost-highway-mulholland-drive/
Perhaps it will get the conversation going.
Thanks for the link. I had checked out Jay’s analysis of Mulholland Drive following my first viewing of the film a few days ago. I was not surprised to see that Jay went with the ‘MK Ultra’ angle – lol. That said, I enjoyed reading his take on the film. Gave me some things to think about, which is all I ask for.
Cheers.
thanks for the link. i’ll have to rewatch the film and read film analysis prior to saturday night, else i don’t feel i’ll have much substance to add to a call.
Thanks to WatermanChris and Dante for attempting to get this thread going.
I have just published a video/audio piece outlining some of my own ideas on Mulholland Drive and the broader idea of film analysis.
great that you made your own video – can’t wait to check it out!
i wanted to mention a bit of a “Mandela Effect” moment i’ve had regarding Mulholland Drive. for some reason, i remember hearing that ABC – the television network originally intending to pick up Mulholland Drive for broadcast – declined to move forward due to concerns relating to 9/11. summat to do with the violence. but that’s probably all in my head, because apparently ABC declined for other reasons.
i suppose it could all be down to something like “post-9/11 trauma projection” or summat like that – the mind glomming onto whatever crossed its path at that time and forcing 9/11 juxtapositions…
looking forward to catching the MSC recording! perhaps i’ll catch a chance to pop in on the pre-call for a bit —
